Who we serve
Before Fran came to South Africa in 2004 she was told that her hands would be used in a significant way. In 2006 Fran learned of babies going home from the local hospital in newspaper. She immediately started to knit outfits for the newborn babies. Ten years later, this simple beginning, is now a beautiful free gift bag of baby cloth nappies etc. given to 3000 mothers of new babies each year in five hospitals.
Each year that is 3000 blankets, 15,000 disposable nappies, 3000 cloth nappies, 3000 face flannels, 3000 vests, 9000 ladies towels, 3000 dental kits, 3000 soaps. 3000 petroleum jelly, 3000 vests and outfits, 3000 quality shopping bags plus other items when available.
Over 200 knitters are now involved (see Knitters page); there are several people engaged in machining blankets, vests and other items going into the bag (see Projects page). The budget has increased from R1000 to R200, 000+ a year all provided by donation (see How to help page)
The State Hospital of Caledon averages 80 babies a month; Montagu 50; Swellendam 40; Bredasdorp 35. Retreat Cape Town 50 That is 250+ babies a month; 3000 a year! The babies just keep coming and other hospitals would love the service, but we have reached our limit. Contact us if you would like to do it yourself.
We have local agents who keep the bags at home so when their hospital calls for more bags, delivery is made that same day. No mother goes without a bag!
A strict control system is in place, supervised by the hospital staff. The way the bags are packed with pre-packed baby and mother’s kits prevent pilferage.
What our customers call home
This week we were told of a shack dwelling mother who opened her bag with her family at home. They were awed by the quality and spontaneous generosity of such a beautiful and practical gift.
Another woman who went to the Bredasdorp hospital to have her baby had nothing for her baby and we really do mean nothing. She was thrilled to tears to receive her Hug a Baby bag.
These are typical of the feedbacks that we receive!
